Revised owl ontology of complications and sequelae including perioperative complications reviewed. Minor modifications made and posted below as version 7. Recommendation made to review output with regard to how surgeons view complications and sequelae. References posted by Phil Brown below: Will be reviewed at the Wellington meeting by EAG and if general agreement obtained will be presented for implementation.

Requirement for description matching FSN in MRCM

  • Current FSN naming conventions result in "non-user-friendly" descriptions. Creation of another description without the semantic tag adds no value

  • Many existing FSNs would be ambiguous without the addition of the semantic tag.

  • Users often do not request "preferred terms" so rely on editors to provide appropriate descriptions.

  • Historically, many FSNs were glorified preferred terms

  • This is an issue that only affects English versions as translation provide terms of use in their languages

  • Challenge to editors is when to create a different preferred term if the FSN term is not user-friendly.

  • This has an impact on acceptance of word order variants as preferred terms.

User-friendly names as additional descriptions for co-occurent and co-occurrent and due to patterns

Asthma co-occurrent with allergic rhinitis --→ Asthma AND allergic rhinitis

There was some concern regarding the proposed PT for X co-occurrent and due to Y (X and Y due to Y) that the name would be awkward if Y is complex. No better alternative was suggested however.
