Complications of procedures

Test of new model for procedure complications using defining rather than subtype relationship

• General consensus obtained for:

  • Disorder X due to Procedure Y to be modeled with a parent of Complication (disorder)

  • Disorder X due to and after (nonsurgical) Procedure Y to be modeled with both Complication (disorder) and Sequela (disorder) parents

  • Model for procedure complications using a defining relationship (Complication (attribute) = Disease x (disorder)) does not appear to add value.

    • Will discuss results with @Guillermo Reynoso

Injuries

Modeling injuries that can be traumatic and/or nontraumatic

• General consensus obtained for:

  • Review 37782003 |Damage (morphologic abnormality)|hierarchy and assure inclusion of any morphologies represented under injury chapter in ICD-11 as well as any nontraumatic morphologies currently in SNOMED CT

  • Retire 19130008 |Traumatic abnormality (morphologic abnormality)|and move all descendants under 37782003 |Damage (morphologic abnormality) while replacing all concepts with “traumatic” in the FSN with morphologies that do not state “traumatic”

  • Retire existing nontraumatic morphologies and replace with morphology without “nontraumatic” in FSN while moving under 37782003 |Damage (morphologic abnormality)|

  • Define injuries using associated morphology = <<37782003 |Damage (morphologic abnormality) +

    • Due to 773760007 |Traumatic event (event)|for traumatic injuries

    • Due to 789750003 |Spontaneous event (event)|for nontraumatic injuries

  • Additions to the terminology should specify intent through FSN or text definition as to whether etiology is traumatic, nontraumatic or either

  • Naming of existing content – options

    • Rename all concepts with traumatic morphologies to Traumatic

    • Create Traumatic and/or nontraumatic injury of X (disorder) as new concepts for existing content represented as both traumatic injuries and nontraumatic injuries
