Language reference sets use cases

A collection of use cases for certain language reference set features, for discussion at the Joint AG meeting 2022-09-28.

Description metadata use case

These might not be mutually exclusive! Use cases might also be addressed by combinations of metadata.

Scope/context

Examples: Default context, consumer, specialty context, data entry, ...

  • Presentation - show the term prefered in context X

  • Other standards - e.g. how to support designation.use=consumer in FHIR

  • Query ranking - weighting by context

Synonymy

Examples: (true) synonym, near-synonym, non-synonym, disallowed, dissuaded, ...

  • Query ranking - weighting by "synonymity"

  • Selection

  • Translation

Acceptability

Examples: preferred, acceptable, non-acceptable

  • Presentation - show preferred term

  • Translation

Correctness

Examples: formally correct y/n, legally correct y/n

Language reference set cascadability use cases

Discussion here limited to language reference sets, but there is a relationship between cascading (as well as promoting) and general dependency between sets of content (where module dependency is one example).

Reuse of translations (user)

Use of common languages with country/regionally specific adaptions

  • Client-side flexibility (e.g. accept-language)

  • Precalculation of "flat" language reference sets

Reuse of translations (authors)

Development of common language translations (en, es, fr, de, ...)
