Description

There are many ways and many metrics to assess the quality of ontologies such as SNOMED CT. These range from technical measures, such as “concepts with incorrect conceptIDs” or “inactive concepts with active relationships” to semantic and ontological measures such as “adequate representation of meaning by attribute relationships” and “consistent disjointness of continuants and occurrents”. Finally there are consistency measures, such as naming conventions and modeling conventions. All of these contribute to the quality of ontologies.

Much research has been performed on quality assessment of ontologies, but there is a risk of a disconnect between the research performed and the quality measures applied within IHTSDO. Firstly, systematic monitoring of research needs to be in place to keep track of quality metrics and the performance of SNOMED CT. Secondly, the relevance of quality metrics for maintenance and use of SNOMED CT needs to be assessed, in order to advise on prioritization and implementation of quality measures in the editorial processes of SNOMED CT and of extensions and other derivatives, as developed by Members and Affiliates.

Objectives

The aim of this work is to provide IHTSDO with an update on the quality measures that have been developed so far, and to provide a framework that enables IHTSDO to assess the relevance of the quality measures for maintenance and use of SNOMED CT.
