1. Content Issue Summary

a. Summary of issue

We have overlap in the naming of Stoma and Ostomy concepts; GMDN use both Stoma and ostomy.  The two terms are often used interchangeably, but the former refers to the opening and the latter refers to the procedure to create the opening (See definitions below)

This are of the terminology (i.e. <<75506009 |Construction of stoma (procedure)|) has recently been reviewed as part of the QI project (https://snomed.atlassian.net/browse/QI-869); however, the remodeling only took into consideration the construction aspect of the stoma as opposed to the representation of exteriorization of the affected internal organ.

SNOMED currently has an entire subhierarchy related to stomas (<<245857005 |Stoma (morphologic abnormality)|) in which the organ being exteriorized is combined with the morphology.  Alternatively, some stomas do not exteriorize the organ (e.g. nephrostomy).  This fast track proposes to make consistent the use of Stoma (clinical finding) and ostomy (procedure) and inactivate organ specific stoma concepts in order to provide a more consistent modeling approach.
