Statement of problem as requested or initially identified
FSNs have a mix of Arteriography, Angiogram, arteriogram, athrogram, e.g.
84200003 Arteriography of pulmonary arteries (procedure)
241232001 Bronchial arteriogram (procedure)
241217008 Cerebral four vessel angiogram (procedure)
A similar problem exists with regard to Arthrography
33148003 Arthrography (procedure); synonym: arthrogram
Synonyms have not been added in a consistent manner and are not always true synonyms but instead are "near" synonyms
Angiogram, arteriogram, athrogram and other imaging concepts ending with suffix "gram" have been used extensively as synonyms on angiography, ateriography and arthrography procedure concepts.
The problem here is that – gram refers to a picture or a record while – graphy refers to the process of producing a picture or record.
Editorial guidance currently prescribes the following naming patterns:
Preferred term inconsistent abbreviation usage
Computed tomography Preferred term to be "CT" however Magnetic Resonance does not prescribe "MR".
Magnetic resonance angiography
FSN: Magnetic resonance angiography of X (procedure)
PT: Magnetic resonance angiography of X
Synonym: Magnetic resonance angiogram of X
Synonym: MR angiography of X
Magnetic resonance venography
FSN: Magnetic resonance venography of X (procedure)
PT: Magnetic resonance venography of X
Synonym: Magnetic resonance venogram of X
Synonym: MR venography of X
Magnetic resonance arthrography
FSN: Magnetic resonance arthrography of X (procedure)
PT: Magnetic resonance arthrography of X
Synonym: Magnetic resonance arthrogram of X
Synonym: MR arthrography of X
Computed tomography angiography
FSN: Computed tomography angiography of X (procedure)
PT: CT angiography of X
Synonym: CT angiogram of X
Synonym: Computed tomography angiography of X
Computed tomography arthrography
FSN: Computed tomography arthrography of X (procedure)

Computed tomography venography

Fluoroscopic arteriography
FSN: Fluoroscopic arteriography of X (procedure)
PT: Fluoroscopic arteriography of X
Synonym: Fluoroscopic arteriogram of X
Synonym: Fluoroscopic angiography of X
Synonym: Fluoroscopic angiogram of X
Fluoroscopic venography

Relevance to International edition
Decision needed as to whether we continue to add these near synonyms. Need to reassess if they are acceptable and therefore allowed to persist in the core.
Related changes impacted by this content development request
Revise concepts nested under:
77343006 | Angiography (procedure) | Synonyms: Angiogram, angiography, diagnostic angiogram and diagnostic angiography.
33148003 |Arthrography (procedure) | Synonyms: Arthrography, arthrogram,
Agreed scope statement
All concepts with descriptions including both gram and graphy attached to the same concept.
Identify additional changes
Need to review other modalities in imaging procedures to make sure any recommended changes are made throughout.
Solution proposed
Depends on outcome of EAG meeting
January 20th EAG minutes:
Consistency across procedures, JCA and MHA noted, was a problem. MHA offered a suggestion to reduce the inconsistency by using synonyms. There needed to be some clean up.
JCA asked MHA if she had enough guidance? MHA do we want to always add angiography? JCA said yes, stick to the current editorial guidance. MHA: indicating the modality in the synonym? JCA said "correct."
The convention is to use the adjectival form i.e. Fluoroscopic arteriography, in the FSN; the noun i.e. Fluoroscopic arteriogram, is acceptable in a synonym.
The Editorial guide has been updated accordingly.
