Combined disorders/procedures and complications and sequela.
First of all, I need to apologize but I must cancel this coming Monday’s ECE call as it falls on a national holiday in the U.S. I would however like to bring up an issue that has recently surfaced regarding the work we are doing around complications and sequelae and obtain some feedback that I can present at Friday’s EAG meeting.
It seems that based on general definitions of complication and sequela that:
All combined disorders and disorders combined with procedures that are defined with a due to relationship are complications
All combined disorders and disorders combined with procedures that are defined with an after relationship are sequelae
All combined disorders and disorders combined with procedures that are defined with both a due and an after relationship are both complications and sequelae.
The above interpretation would require that all combined disorders and disorders combined with procedures that are defined with any of the above relationships have an additional asserted parent of complication, sequela or both. Working with Phil Brown, we have come up with editorial guidance for this approach (attached). There is an alternative approach that I am also considering which is to retire complication and sequela and just model/name all combined disorders and disorders combined with procedures as per our current guidelines and add complication and sequela as appropriate as synonyms or preferred terms. Thoughts?
