Environmental management: attachment process (procedure):

• Environmental can be interpreted in many ways

• Questions on where this one came from. 

• In NIC Environmental Management is defined as 'Manipulation of the patient’s surroundings for therapeutic benefit, sensory appeal, and psychological well-being'. 

  • Different types - comfort, community, home preparation and safety/violence/prevention. (there are concepts in SNOMED for these).

• Attachment is a process. Delays can be experienced when a child is separated from parents.  

• Nurses recognise the risks and encourage behaviours that promote attachment. An important part of neonatal care.

• Question the difference in meaning between promoting attachment and encouraging attachment with a preference for encouraging attachment. Practical aspects would include -  participating in the child's care, skin-to-skin contact, being close to the child.

• Question on terming as it's really the encouragement of behaviours that eventually lead to attachment. 

• Question the meaning of Environmental management - factors in the physical environment or ward rountines?
