Genomics and Precision Medicine Clinical Reference Group
Welcome to the Genomics and Precision Medicine Reference Group space
The fields of genomics and precision medicine are evolving rapidly across the globe, with a large impact on the delivery of health care. These two fields are already revolutionising medicine and public health by providing more accurate, rapid and cost-effective genetic tests.
SNOMED International and SNOMED CT are well positioned to support these developments as the supplier of a global clinical terminology.
In order for SNOMED CT to be fit for purpose to support both of these areas, and to ensure that SNOMED CT continues its evolution, informed by the developing global understanding of both these areas, SNOMED International has formed the Genomics and Precision Medicine Clinical Reference Group (CRG).
Purpose
The purpose of the group is to gather use case requirements linked to Genomics and Precision Medicine from SNOMED International membership. Through the use of SNOMED Forums, the group will also publicise the stated requirements to a broader audience through personal contact and social media, to ensure that the understanding of requirements by SNOMED international matches that of Member countries, particularly where the National Genomics Agency and the National Release Centre work separately, and also to reach out to regional and international projects through GA4GH.
SCOPE
The scope of the group is to provide detailed use case requirements for Genomics and Precision Medicine. The focus is both at a high level to understand linkages through National Genomics initiatives, and also at a detailed content level, to understand where SNOMED International needs to focus limited authoring resources. The use case requirements will include timescales to assist in the content prioritisation process.
There is no commitment from the establishment of the group, that content requirements that are highlighted will be actioned. The normal content development process will apply to any content requirements raised by the group
Strategic linkage
SNOMED International is currently developing an overarching Genomics Approach document, detailing in a broad context, the direction the organisation will take in creating content and derivatives to support the implementation of Genomics and Precision Medicine. To ensure this document is valid in its assertions, it is fundamental that the understanding of national, regional and international initiatives are correct. The future developments in SNOMED CT will require resources to author content, potentially develop concept model extensions, and possibly the creation and maintenance of derivative products. This marks a considerable investment by SNOMED International, and as such these commitments must be based on the correct information regarding use case requirements
