SNOMED International acknowledges the importance of supporting cancer services and cancer care. This commitment is visible in the collaboration agreements SNOMED International have in place with AJCC (American Joint Committee on Cancer) and UICC (Union for International Cancer Control), and under development with ICCR (International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting). The session will provide a forum for each of the partners to provide a background to their standard, the benefits of working with SNOMED CT, and the inclusion of the standards in the SNOMED CT International release to ensure their uptake by the widest possible audience. These collaborations will in addition support the interoperability of future cancer data to support direct patient care, clinical cancer registries and cancer research initiatives. Whilst the standards and their inclusion in SNOMED CT is important, their implementation in existing systems is essential to ensure the benefits are realised. Through the presentations and questions during the session, we will explore the implementation successes and challenges faced by today’s cancer clinicians, with presentations exploring the work and challenges with Cancer registries and also the work of CAP (College of American Pathologists) on the use of protocols, specifically for breast cancer.
